U Street Music Hall Gives Back to the Community

Lead: U Street Music Hall continues to impact Ward 1’s youth by educating aspiring young musicians through the U Street Music Foundation.

U Street Music Hall, which is located in the U Street Corridor, is a well-renowned music venue in Washington, D.C. that has jump-started the career of many influential musicians and serves as one of Washington’s finest music venues. Artists such as Coldplay and Rita Ora made their debuts in the music hall.

Opened in 2011, U Street Music Hall has built a reputation for negating the traditional atmosphere of a nightclub or music venue. However, it has received the approval of the community by finding a way to give back.

“When we opened the Music Hall we had no idea it would hold the type of reputation is does today. I genuinely envisioned a place where people with a passion for music could freely express themselves, and it became everything we imagined and more,” said owner Rob Harman.

Amidst the accomplishments that the Music Hall has acquired in its short time, one of its most profound achievements is the U Street Music Foundation. This foundation was put in place to aid music education and music events put on by the youth in Ward 1. Many students with a passion for music in Ward 1 and surrounding areas are given the opportunity to practice music at their leisure by funding many events and education costs.

“We yearn to help educate the youth of this community through music and service. We have granted over 300 students with scholarships that have helped them attend some of the most profound performing arts schools in the district,” said employee Javier Ronero.

The foundation was established shortly after the Music Hall was founded. Since then the Music Hall has helped to educate and inspire many young people to follow their dreams of a career in music.

“Working for U Street music hall has exposed me to so many amazing people who are linked through the power of music. People can come here and explore their musical interest and in return the music hall gives back to the community,”said event planner Austin Palmer.

U Street Music Foundation funds arts schools in Ward 1 and helps to showcase performances by young people. Many students have been able to move on to professional performing companies with the help of the foundation. As U Street Music Hall continues to gain success and recognition, more arts students are able to continue pursuing their dreams in the music industry.
