Lady Terrapins Sail Past High Point University
Prior to the start of the tip off, all eyes were fixated on freshman forward Kiah Gliiespie and her performance certainly did not disappoint. However, Maryland also received exceptional performances from a number of players as they easily defeated the High Point Panthers.
Things were looking up when the Panthers scored the first bucket of the game, but things went downhill rather quickly. The Terps remained unfazed as they answered with a 10-0 run, forcing high point to take their first timeout.
Throughout the first half, the Terps kept dictated the tempo by playing a man-to-man defense, forcing turnovers and scoring in transition. Led by junior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Maryland closed the first half with a score of 48-20 by playing their up tempo game.
The second half was equally as difficult for the Panthers as the Lady Terps continued to play with intensity on both sides of the court. Freshman Kiah Gilliespie came out of her shell during the second half, ending the game with 19 points. Walker-Kimbrough also recorded her second career double-double, scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. However, Maryland’s scoring was balanced as 11 players touched the floor and nine players scored.
The margin of victory would make you think that Maryland was proud of their performance, that couldn’t have been further from the truth.
Coach Frese shared that “she expects more from her team” during the post game media session. Often times she thought her team could have performed better on the defensive end. Driving home the point by stating that her team needs to be able to play “with the same intensity” no matter which team they face.
The Terps are back in action on November 26 as they face Old Dominion.
